1) Sweet potato

One of nature’s superfoods, sweet potato contains good bacterium that regulates the digestive tract and helps animals with sensitive stomachs. Sweet potatoes are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants – and their rich orange colour indicates that they’re high in carotenoids such as beta carotene, supporting the immune system. Sweet potatoes’ natural sugars are slowly released into the bloodstream, helping to ensure a balanced and regular source of energy for your dog.

Always cook sweet potatoes before feeding to your precious pup, as raw potato can upsetting to the stomach.

2) Coconut meat

Coconut is the latest superfood craze – we too at Soopa are mad about coconut! Coconut meat contains medium chain triglycerides, metabolised in a different manner to other triglycerides. This fat is used as a source of energy transported directly to the liver rather than being stored as fat. 50 per cent of the special saturated fat in coconut is Laurin, which is converted in the body to Monolaurin which holds great antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.

3) Papaya

Papaya, the king of digestion, contains ‘papain’. This enzyme helps to digest proteins and break down obnoxious gases. It also helps to soothe an upset stomach, and is a nice hypoallergenic treat for sensitive pups. Chewy, juicy and bursting with Vitamin C, papaya is a definite superfood! Always make sure to remove the seeds before feeding papaya to your dog, and chop the fruit into pieces.

4) Blueberries

The grandad of the superfoods movement, this lovely little fruit packs a powerful nutritional punch with fibre, manganese and other notable antioxidants like anthocyanins. Blueberries are an amazing, healthy treat valued for their amazing antioxidants.

5) Strawberries

The delicious red fruits are loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants called phenols. The combination of these antioxidants, along with high levels of vitamin C, folate and potassium push strawberries to the top of the list of antioxidant providers among fruit and berries!

6) Broccoli

Broccoli and its cruciferous family (say hi to cousin kale) are among the most powerful weapons in our dietary arsenal against cancer, which is why broccoli is a superfood. Broccoli also boosts the immune system offering an incredibly high level of nutrition at a very low caloric price – broccoli is one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there.

7) Flaxseeds

Ground flaxseed is a sensational superfood for dogs. It’s a rich source of minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, phytoestrogens and soluble and insoluble fibre. Abundant evidence supports the value of flaxseed in preventing illnesses such as heart disease and cancer, as well as aiding  digestive problems.

The superfoods listed above are all tasty and nutritious examples of vegan dog food – but always introduce new foods to your pup’s diet slowly and watch out for any digestive discomfort! Speak to your veterinarian if you notice your dog not reacting well to any new foods.
