6 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day 2021

Earth Day (22nd April) is a day dedicated to education and activism. It was created back in 1970 and, as you can image, has since grown astronomically. The organisation now works with over 75,000 partners in over 190 countries to drive action for the planet.

If you're stuck on ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day - don't overthink it! There's no 'right' way to celebrate. It's about whatever makes you feel closer to the natural world and whatever makes you feel like you're making positive change for the planet.

Some people may only upload a post to social media about it, whereas others will watch documentaries, participate in a campaign etc. Both these forms of celebration are valid. You can spend the day however you see fit.

But if you're truly still stuck for ideas for how to celebrate Earth Day, I'm here to help you out!

Eating plant-based is one of the most effective ways we can reduce our impact on the planet as individuals. If you're not already vegan, I'd suggest whipping up a plant-powered feast of champions! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Whether it's something narrated by David Attenborough or something more hard-hitting like Cowspiracy, cosying up with a warm beverage and an informative documentary is a perfect way to spend Earth Day, especially if you're busy working throughout the day and can only celebrate in the evening.

Gardening is good for the mind, body and soul, but the planet appreciates it, too! Plants clean the air and soil, support small creatures like pollinators and birds, and thus increase biodiversity.

If you're new to gardening but like the idea of growing your own food, start with buying herbs (you can find them in your local supermarket or garden centre). Growing food in your garden is a wonderful habit to get into because it reduces carbon emissions, reduces plastic-usage, and you have complete control over pesticide and herbicide use.

I've lost count of how many books about nature and the environment that I have added to my to-read list - it's constantly growing. If you're one of those folks who like to use international days as an opportunity to educate yourself further, allow me to recommend some books for you: The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells, and This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein.

If you've been meaning to make a sustainable switch in your life lately but haven't got around to it, Earth Day is your chance! I've been trying to push myself to make more eco-friendly choices in my life over the past few years, and so I've decided to stop shopping from unethical food brands starting from Earth Day onwards. Here are a few extra ideas for sustainable habits you could start:

The more time we spend in nature, the more we can appreciate the wonders of it. Being in the company of the great outdoors does wonders for your body and mind. Have you ever gone for a walk in a park or field to calm your nerves after a stressful day? I'm sure most of us have. That's the healing powers of nature at play!

Can you imagine life without hearing birdsong in the morning? Or can you imagine what streets would look like without trees? Or a city without parks? If you can't bear to imagine a world without nature, then join in on the Earth Day celebrations to fight for a greener future.
