This week, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released findings on a recent study and declared that if society does not take extreme action to reduce global warming, by as early as 2030, we could see disastrous effects of climate change.

By 2030, if no change is made, the report has predicted that the planet will rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This rise in temperature will bring with it extreme droughts, wildfires, floods & food shortages. The study has predicted these findings through the current trend of greenhouse gas emissions that are contasntly on the up.

The report speaks about eliminating emissions from the likes of coal, oil and natural gas which we understand would ensure significant change. However, there is something that every member of society could adopt today that would also help the fight against climate change and that is to reduce their intake of animal products.

A study carried out by Tulane University & the University of Michigan found that 'the consumption of meat, dairy & eggs makes up 84% of food-related greenhouse gas emissions' unlike plant-based foods that only makeup 3%. Raising animals for food is said to result in more harm to the environment due to these levels of greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

Of course, we certainly need to aim to eliminate emissions from fossil fuels but with the rise in population and demand in consumption, we also need to look at reducing or better yet, eliminating animal products from our diets in order to make the drastic change we need.

The University of Oxford has also released research findings that show that by cutting out animal products, an individuals carbon footprint would reduce by 73%. It is also worth knowing that animal agribusiness is responsible for 65% of all nitrous oxide emissions, a greenhouse gas that is 296 times more troxic than CO2 that stays in our atmosphere for 150 years!

As well as the crazy levels of greenhouse gases, industrialised agriculture has been found to be one of the main culprits for water and air pollution and deforestation. Just think of the amount of land, clean water and fresh air we could save if people simply cut back and ate more plants!?

In conclusion, from the large number of studies conducted, we think it is very clear that going vegan is the single biggest choice you could make to help save the planet from further harm. We understand that going completely vegan over night may be difficult for some but if you want to join the fight against climate change, why not start by opting for two full vegan days per week?
