British households are producing around 6.6 billion tonnes of food waste per year. During the pandemic and several lockdowns, when many of us we forced to stay at home, we started to rethink what they buy and how they eat. This week we’re celebrating Zero Waste Week!
The week-long campaign aims to spread awareness on the use of plastic, recycling, and food waste.
Considering the climate crisis issues, why don’t we give it a try for longer than just a week?
At Mighty Plants, we want to help you become more waste-conscious all year round; that’s why we offer sustainable shopping and eating solutions.
Here are some tips on how to reduce food waste at your home.
Buy frozen food online
The freezer is your friend when you want to fight the food waste at your home. Frozen food generates nearly 50 per cent less food waste when compared to fresh and chilled foods consumed in households. There are many reasons why we love frozen plant-based food.
Freezing is the best way of preserving vitamins and nutrients. Frozen products live longer than fresh food. Large quantities of frozen products are cheaper.
If you store fresh food for a long time, it will quickly go off, and you will have to throw it away. You won’t have that problem with frozen food as it has a much longer shelf life.
Even if you buy frozen products in larger packaging, you can use as much as you need and keep the rest in the freezer for as long as you want.
When you buy frozen food online, it will be delivered to you frozen, meaning you can still store in your freezer for a very long time.
Plan and prepare your meals
How to eat all the food you buy? Plan your meals ahead of time. Make a menu for the whole week with products you have in your kitchen. Daily home cooking can reduce food waste.
Prepare a good shopping list to buy only the products you really need. Check your storage and fridge before you decide to go to a supermarket or visit your vegan online store.
Freeze the leftovers
You don’t know what to do with the leftover carrots you had for lunch?
Look for inspiration online, and you will find plenty of vegan recipes that you cook the next day.
Otherwise, just freeze them! They will stay fresh for longer, and by freezing them, they will keep all their nutritional benefits until the next time you need them.
Buy frozen plant-based alternatives to meat
Our food production causes 30% of our carbon footprint, and 80% of it comes from industrial animal farming. Meat and dairy production requires and pollutes an extreme amount of water and land, not to mention it’s cruel and unethical. Reducing consumption of animal-based food is one single best thing you can do to help the environment. By choosing frozen meat alternatives, you help even more.
