Joaquin Phoenix received the Golden Globe Award For Best Actor in a motion picture the Joker yesterday.
The actor used the stage to express his support for the decision to serve a vegan meal at the ceremony.
While accepting an award the actor said: “I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It really sends a powerful message.”
Phoenix, who has been vegan for years, was referring to the vegan menu served at the 77th Golden Globes. The menu included golden beet soup, king oyster mushrooms cooked and presented to resemble scallops, with wild-mushroom risotto, roasted baby purple and green Brussels sprouts, globe carrots and pea tendrils.
“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that this year’s Golden Globe Awards would - for the very first time - serve an all plant-based dinner,” the actor said.
“By acknowledging animal agriculture’s role in the degradation of our planet and boldly taking measures to do its part to reduce harm, the HFPA has shown great leadership."
"Contrary to popular belief, I don't want to rock the boat. The boat is already f*cking rocked. It's really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that...I have not always been a virtuous man, I have learned so much, and so many of you in this room have given me multiple opportunities to get it right and I'm deeply grateful."
"But together hopefully we can be unified, and hopefully make some changes. It's great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives, and I hope that we can do that. We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs. I'll try to do better and I hope you will too."
