A survey conducted by food delivery platform Deliveroo reveals that 20% of people in the UK will not eat meat during the Christmas holidays.
The poll also reveals that most of those people (60%) going plant-based for Christmas made the switch within the past four years. 46% decided to change their diet and vegan or vegetarian in the last two years.
The study involving 2,000 respondents also found that more men are ditching meat in the last year (47%) compared to women (23%).
When asked why they were ditching meat for Christmas, the top reason was that they were preparing Christmas dinner for other vegans and vegetarians. More than half (55%) of respondents said they predicted having guests who were following a plant-based diet.
Among other reasons, people mentioned health (32%), animal welfare concerns (27%).
The recent poll from Deliveroo confirms a significant shift away from animal-based products in the UK.
A previous study by The Vegan Society revealed that around a quarter of Brits cut on meat and dairy since Covid-19.
Also, Deliveroo's sales data shows a huge increase in orders of plant-based foods. The company reported 105% year-on-year growth in the sale of vegan dishes since November 2020, which means it is the fastest-growing category. Deliveroo works with 14,000 vegan-friendly and vegetarian-friendly partners within the UK. The cities where vegan food is the most popular are Brighton, Leeds and Bristol.
