Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), food grade – one fine white powder for raising bakes, cleaning the kitchen and fizzing bath soaks, in packs from 500g to 25kg.
This is pure food grade sodium bicarbonate: a single ingredient with a long list of jobs. In baking it works as a raising agent for dense bakes; around the home its gentle abrasiveness makes it an effective, non-toxic cleaner for tiles, drains and worktops, and it is one of the two key ingredients in homemade bath bombs. Available in four pouch sizes from 500g to 3kg, plus a 25kg trade sack.
What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder? Sodium bicarbonate needs an acidic ingredient (lemon juice, vinegar, buttermilk) to react and release gas; baking powder already contains its own acid. Recipes are written for one or the other, so they are not direct swaps.
What does "food grade" mean? It meets the purity standard required for use in food, so the same pack is safe in your baking as well as your cleaning cupboard.
How do I make bath bombs? Combine two parts sodium bicarbonate with one part Citric Acid (Food Grade), then mould – the mix fizzes on contact with bath water.
Trade note: available in 500g, 1kg, 2kg, 3kg and 25kg packs.
