It's an incredibly versatile spice which can be used in a wide range of sweet and savoury dishes and beverages. It adds flavour and aroma to food such as rice, lentils, vegetables, as well as baked goods. It can also be used as a traditional flavouring in tea and coffee.

 It's made from seeds of several different plant species native to India and Indonesia.
