Plant-based food is not only good for our dogs and our planet, but by choosing it we are preventing other animals from becoming pet food. One of the businesses that is working hard to make our dogs healthy and spare the life of many other animals is HOWND.

HOWND was created in 2015 and is now a multi-award-winning UK ethical lifestyle brand for dogs, offering 100% plant-based health, wellness and hygiene under one roof. Cruelty-free and vegan is not a marketing trend for HOWND; it forms the core ethos of our company.

The brand's co-founders Jo Amit and Mark Hirschel were already working in the pet industry in 2013 and discovered there weren't any all-natural, cruelty-free pet care options on the market. One day while researching essential oils for humans to use with dogs, something clicked: aromatherapy could be used to help keep pets healthy! And so, the first range of shampoos and body mists was born. 

Jo and Mark set out to disrupt the market with a dog lifestyle brand without the cost to animal welfare. Jo is devoted to animal welfare, and her family, including her three children, have been vegan for more than four years. Mark is a passionate animal lover, and when he's not busy with HOWND, Mark can usually be found cycling on and off-road with his friends or walking his 30kg Portuguese water dog.

We created our low-fat, 100% Natural Hemp Wellness Treats in 2018 to complement our ethical range of pet care products. Enthused by their reception and recognising the growing interest in vegan diets for dogs, HOWND started developing plant-based dog food, and in 2021 we became the first UK company to create a nutritionally complete and balanced superfood, high in protein, hypoallergenic and super delicious - all powered by plants, not animals.

All of our pet care products are made in the UK, and we make an effort to source raw ingredients locally. Our Hemp Wellness Treats are hand-baked in Devon and made with ethically sourced ingredients such as organic hemp. Up until now, our three wet Superfood flavours were made in Germany. We are currently creating our recipes in the UK to further lower our carbon footprint. There is no change to any ingredients, but there may be a slight difference in texture over the next few months. We are confident that dogs are still going to love the taste.

Contrary to popular belief that dogs are carnivores, dogs are actually biologically omnivorous and can therefore not only survive but thrive on a plant-based diet.
