There are countless positives to the vegan diet when it comes to your health. Plant-based foods are bursting with a variety of nutrients, the diet prevents serious illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and cancers, and it can even help you shed excess pounds.

People are reaping the health benefits of the vegan diet all over the world, with more folks going vegan by the day. In fact, the number of vegans in the UK alone quadrupled from 2006 to 2018!

So let’s take a closer look at why you might want to say farewell to animal products forever and begin fuelling yourself with nourishing plants instead.

Cutting out animal products means that you’re left with an endless selection of plant foods like legumes, vegetables, fruits, etc. Therefore you’re more than likely going to branch out and use cooking ingredients that are new to you, making your diet more nutritionally diverse. Eating the same few animal products every day means you’re getting the same bunch of nutrients day after day. Instead of doing this, you could use plants to mimic the flavour of meat, while also benefiting from their vitamins and minerals.

Many people find themselves worrying about whether they’ll be able to get enough protein on a vegan diet, and I can assure you, you can! If you’re consuming enough calories, then you should be getting enough protein. The main nutrients to watch out for when you’re vegan are iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and zinc. And you can easily get all of these nutrients by following a varied diet and taking vegan-friendly supplements wherever necessary.

An unhealthy diet increases your risk of serious diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. You can keep yourself healthy and ward off disease by eating nourishing food and cutting out the bad stuff. A whole foods vegan diet is an excellent option if you require a health boost because there’s much less room for falling into unhealthy habits when you’re eating mostly plants! A whole foods vegan focuses on whole foods (aka foods in their natural, unprocessed form) such as fruits, vegetables, nutsseeds, and beans.

Also, as a plant-based diet is so effective at preventing disease, vegans are often able to live longer, healthier lives.

Plant-based diets are lower in fat and higher in dietary fibre, which helps with weight loss. Fibre reduces your appetite by keeping you feeling full for longer while foods with low-fat content tend to be lower in calories. Many new vegans report losing weight after adopting a plant-based diet without even trying!

Digesting plant foods are easier for your body than digesting animal products, which could lead to an increase in energy levels when you first go vegan. Plant-based foods also tend to have excellent energy-boosting properties, such as avocado, nut butters, and oats. Having more energy to exercise and wake up in the morning is one of the wonderful health benefits you could experience within a couple of weeks of ditching meat, dairy, and eggs. Here are some energy-boosting recipes:
