American burger chain White Castle is the first one to add plant-based cheese to its menu.

The fast-food chain will soon be offering dairy-free cheddar cheese, from a plant-based manufacturer GoodPlanet Foods in New Jersey and New York City beginning March 1.

“We are excited to bring this new non-dairy, vegan item to Cravers in the New York and New Jersey areas with the hope of taking it to other markets in the future,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle, in a statement.

The customers can order vegan topping with any burger from the menu, including the Impossible Slider made with plant-based meat from Impossible Foods.

White Castle is known for being one of the first to offer vegan and vegetarian options to its customers. Their first Veggie Slider was introduced in 2015. The company also serves the burgers in vegan buns.

White Castle is also one of the food chains pioneers offering the new generation of plant-based meats.

The restaurant started testing the Impossible Slider in April 2018, and five months later, the burger became a permanent offering on its menu.

“We’re committed to innovation, and we’re always looking for ways to do things better and make things better for our loyal customers,” Richardson said.

“It’s exciting to be the fast-food restaurant that’s leading the trend in providing plant-based options for consumers.”
