Vegums Becomes Carbon Negative

Vegan vitamins brand Vegums has joined a growing number of eco-conscious companies. The St Helens- based startup announced that they are now carbon negative. 

The brand achieved that by offsetting the carbon emitted from manufacturing to delivery through planting trees across the world. Each tree planted absorbs 0.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere whilst also overcoming the negative effects of deforestation on animal populations and the environment. 

The company says that becoming carbon negative requires not just a bold goal, but a detailed and in-depth plan. 

Vegums has a fierce plan in place to remove the previous carbon emissions as well as the carbon that will be emitted in 2021. This includes direct emissions for the entire supply chain, from product manufacture to delivery.

Vegums have partnered with regulated non-profit NGOs across the world, who work with local communities to plant trees whilst reducing extreme poverty and combating deforestation. They hire and train villagers to plant trees, giving them a consistent income to provide for their families and support the local economy. The company also plants one tree for every review on TrustPilot.

Managing Director of Vegums, John Rushton is proud that his company is doing its part in the battle against climate change, commenting on the current climate crisis ha said: “The climate crisis is real and it’s going to affect all of us. If the global temperature rises beyond 2.5°C, it will cause irreversible damage. Vegums couldn’t just stand by and let this happen.”

“We created fully biodegradable packaging, cleaned beaches and planted trees, but we knew we could do more. Settling for carbon-neutral wasn’t good enough. The only way we could truly make a difference was by removing more CO2 than we emitted.” 

Primarily, Vegums has achieved carbon neutrality due to investing in offsets that remove carbon that has already been emitted. Then based on calculated business growth, the focus has been shifted towards removing carbon that would be emitted in 2021.

To ensure Vegums has achieved carbon negativity, the company had to offset more carbon than it has emitted and will still emit in 2021 while continuously monitoring all the steps and growth. 

Lisa Miceli, the marketing manager of Vegums, added: “Since I joined Vegums, we have strived to be the most environmentally friendly company there is. This is a huge milestone for us, we will continue to offset carbon as Vegums grows, ensuring we remain carbon negative.”

Vegums was founded by two plant-based working pharmacists and friends: John and Abdul who knew that pursuing a vegan or plant-based diet can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. 

The duo decided to use their pharmacological expertise and research non-animal vitamin ingredients to develop the ideal multivitamin for a vegan and plant-based lifestyle. The vegan supplements are made using non-animal ingredients with natural colours and flavours. This means using unrefined cane sugar and gelling agents derived from citrus peel.
