Vegan Tennis Star Donates €1 Million To Fight Coronavirus

World's number one tennis player Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena have donated €1 million to help combat coronavirus in Serbia.

The money will help to buy medical equipment and supplies to Serbian hospitals.

"Unfortunately, more and more people are getting infected every day. My wife Jelena and I are putting together a plan how to best donate our resources to people in need. Our donation is one million euros for the purchase of ventilators and other medical equipment," said Djokovic.

Tennis star announced the news during a video press conference last week.

Djokovic's wife, Jelena, is the director of the Novak Djokovic Foundation.

The couple has been researching how they could 'make the best impact on our country' in helping stop the disease.

"Jelena, I, my foundation, have decided to gather as much relevant information as possible this week to determine how best to donate our resources – knowledge, time, money, how it will affect the largest number of people across Serbia." he told Sportklub.

Djokovic says his foundation's staff 'will be monitoring everything' to get equipment in place.

He thanked the hospital workers: "I wish to express my gratitude to all the medical staff across the world and in my native Serbia for helping everyone infected by the coronavirus."

He also thanked China for sending several shipments of medical equipment and doctors to Serbia saying they have given the pair 'tremendous help and support'.
