Vegan News: Asda faces backlash after promoting 'free range' milk

With more and more individuals choosing to consume plant based alternatives, rapidly declining sales have seen dairy farms closing up and down the country. It's safe to say that the dairy industry is in big trouble.

As to be expected, they've come out fighting, trying to claw back sales with the launch of a new 'free range' milk, which guarantees that cows have been out to pasture for at least 180 days of the year. Of course, what isn't mentioned is any of the other horrific practices in the dairy industry, including the fact that cows are repeatedly forcibly impregnated to ensure they keep producing milk, or that their babies are stolen from them and either slaughtered as calf or raised and killed for beef.

Asda announced the launch of this 'free range' milk on their Facebook page and was met with a barrage of criticism from conscious consumers across the UK. It's truly heartening to see the sheer volume of comments from those who wholeheartedly debunk the myth of 'free range' or 'cruelty free' milk.

Shee-Danielle Silvers  'Oh and also... how many people would drink this if it was dog milk instead? The human body has no more need for the breast milk of a cow than it does the breast milk of a dog cat or zebra! Drinking human breast milk as a fully grown adult is one thing but drinking the breast milk of a DIFFERENT species entirely??? So glad I saw the light and realised how ridiculous that truly is.'

Bryony Curtis 'Does the "free range" label also ensure the calves won't be taken away from their mothers? Of course not, you wouldn't be able to steal their milk then.'

Aimée Cook 'Just to clarify though, your cows are impregnated to make milk, then they have their calves taken off them so we can drink the milk? The whole process is then repeated over and over... the only real difference being they are in a field as opposed to racking whilst this is happening?'

Charlotte Nash 'I guess theyre trying to market milk better so they're pushing the free range label because cows milk sales are rapidly declining and plant based milk sales are higher than ever!'

Asda have been accused of deleting some of the most negative comments on the post, but they are coming in thick and fast - we highly recommend you pop over and leave your own comment and join the thousands of others standing up against the myth that the dairy industry are peddling here.
