Vegan Meat Brand Launches Seitan Pepperoni

UK's leading manufacturer of seitan products LoveSeitan has launched the plant-based pepperoni made from seitan. 

The company worked for over a year to develop its latest product which it describes as the UK's first-ever pepperoni made from seitan. The vegan pepperoni is 100 per cent soy-free, vegan, and Kosher certified.  It comes sliced in 100g packs for £1.95 - or larger unsliced packs(275g) for £3.95. It is available for home delivery across the UK.

In a statement sent to Plant Based News, co-founder Steve Swindon said: "We're all very excited to launch Seitan Pepperoni, especially as it's a UK first! There's no denying that pepperoni is the world's favourite pizza topping - now we can enjoy a plant-based version without the need to involve animals in the process.

"We've spent a long time developing this product to make sure it fits the pepperoni taste profile and appearance as closely as possible. After many different variants, we've finally found the right recipe to satisfy pepperoni lovers. We're looking forward to seeing how it's received by consumers and businesses across the country.

Seitan products are healthy, low fat and protein-rich meat alternatives. They contain no cholesterol and saturated fats.
Seitan contains as much protein as chicken breast (around 30%) and it has a higher protein content than pork meat, eggs, beef, milk and fish.

The term seitan comes from the Japanese language and can be translated as "proper protein". It is a combination of several words: sei, meaning “made of” or “proper/correct” and tan, the first character in the Japanese word tanpaku, which means “protein.” The term was coined in the1960s by philosopher and founder of the macrobiotic diet George Ohsawa who brought seitan to the Western countries.

The company was founded by Steve Swindon and Nick Abear in 2016. In 2018 they received investment from vegan entrepreneur Heather Mills. 

Commenting on her venture she said: "This is another really exciting investment for me. I have always had a secret recipe for seitan and, usually, when I try other people's, it’s just awful."I met Steve and Nick last year and tried theirs, and was blown away. They have absolutely nailed it."
