Food giant Nestle has launched a plant-based version of its popular milk chocolate bar KitKat.
The brand new recipe was developed by chocolate experts at Nestle R&D Centre in York, "the original home of the KitKat."
Alexander von Maillot, Head of Confectionery at Nestlé, said: "One of the most common requests we see on social media is for a vegan KitKat, so we're delighted to be able to make that wish come true. I can't wait for people to be able to try this amazingly tasty new KitKat. This is a product for everyone who wants a little more plant-based in their life!"
The new vegan treat contains the crispy wafer covered with creamy chocolate blended with dairy-free rice milk.
Like the traditional KitKat the vegan one is made with 100% certified sustainable cocoa, sourced through the Nestle Cocoa Plan in collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance.
KitKat vegan is approved by The Vegan Society and has its label on the packaging.
"Taste was a key factor when developing the plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” said Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé confectionery product technology centre in York.
"We used our expertise in ingredients, together with a test and learn approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat."
The new vegan treat is now available in shops across the UK.
