The first vegan butcher shop selling only 100% plant-based meat alternatives is set to open in Nottingham this spring.

The shop called Faux will have a deli counter and offer animal-free bacon, chicken, burgers, meatballs, pastrami, salami, black pudding, pork belly as well as pickles, gravies, bread and delicacies from local independent producers. Customers will also be able to order Breakfast packs, BBQ boxes and seasonal boxes.

The new venture was founded by Ritchie Stainsby and Lauren Nally, who own a restaurant located in the city centre. During the pandemic the restaurant launched home-delivered vegetable boxes and vegan dishes.

"We have been working on our own range of plant-based meat alternatives for a couple of years now, trialling them in the restaurant on a few occasions. We feel we have been able to create some amazing products," Ritchie told Nottingham Post.

"The idea behind the concept is to provide an authentic experience for the customers, meaning they can shop small (or large) by weight, with fresh, locally made ingredients to cook with.

"Lots of vegan alternatives on the market are pre-prepared, leaving people without much choice of what to cook. With our base range of ingredients, they'll be able to pull together hundreds of meals. The faux meats taste, look, smell and even behave very similar to real meats," he added.

If everything goes as planned, Faux is set to open late March or early April.

Lauren added: "Die-hard vegans, vegetarians, or anyone without specific dietary requirements can eat and enjoy our products. Maybe people want to go meat-free on Mondays, or reduce their red meat consumption.

"This will be a nice way of not completely changing the food you like to cook and enjoy, with the added health benefits."

"We'll also have an option for freshly made sandwiches, rolls and bagels, offering beautiful options with stock straight from our counter."
