World Environment Day (5th June) began back in 1974 and has since flourished into a global platform for raising awareness for environmental issues and taking action. This year, the theme is ecosystem restoration.
The world is losing precious ecosystems, like forests, every day at a time when we need them the most. Diverse, healthy ecosystems serve as protection for the earth, and without them, humanity simply won't be able to thrive. With global education and awareness, we can build the world back as a greener and more sustainable place. Visit the World Environment Day website to learn more.
A simple way to support organisations such as World Environment Day is by celebrating. You can celebrate in any way that suits you, from cooking up a sustainable banquet of food to hosting a cosy, David Attenborough movie night. If you're stuck for ideas for how to spend World Environment Day 2021, I'm going to share a few unique ideas with you, so stick around!
The word craftivism comes from merging the words craft and activism. It's a way of mixing creativity with education and protest. You can take part in craftivism through whatever medium you like, from knitting to creating informative zines. If you want to get creative, gather some supplies in the garden and get messy while crafting something meaningful.
Eating what's in season is more nutritious and tends to contain fewer chemicals. It's also better for the planet; food that's not in season has to travel a long distance to get on supermarket shelves, which means it has a hefty carbon footprint. So in preparation for June 5th, fill your fridge and pantry with seasonal, locally grown produce (it's also nice to support your local farmers) and see what delicious meals you can make.
I tend to stick to the pavement when running because it's an easy route that I'm used to. But nothing can compare to the feeling of running in nature; it's far more pleasant than stomping on hard concrete, breathing in the fumes from cars driving by. So this World Environment Day, get out into a forest, a stunning wheat field or meadow, and go for a run!
Around 30 million tonnes of household waste is generated in the UK every year, and a lot of it is packaging waste. So why not challenge yourself and go zero-waste for the day? After all, it's just for one day, and it's likely more manageable than you think. All it takes is a bit of preparation, and you'll be good to go. You'll also learn some new and interesting ways of utilising household waste, such as using old coffee jars to create mini terrariums!
Nature and yoga are two things that have the effortless ability to calm us, and so merging them is a recipe for complete and utter relaxation. Visit your local park or set up your yoga mat in your back garden to get your daily dose of vitamin D and fresh air.
