1. Request Vegan Meals In Advance
Many hosts and travel companies will be happy to prepare vegan options for you if you reach out and give them a heads up in advance! Indeed, we have enjoyed delicious vegan meals on flights, hotels and at B&B’s which did not list vegan options on their websites simply because we asked in advance.
2. Download Happy Cow
We swear by Happy Cow. A vegan travel app and website, Happy Cow allows you to search over 180+ countries for vegan and vegetarian restaurants, restaurants with vegan options and local health stores and, in our case, enables us to plan our whole holidays around delicious vegan food! Access is also free to users, who can also contribute content, whether it be adding a new vegan find or reviewing the listed restaurants.
3. Join Local Vegan Groups
Many areas have their own dedicated vegan Facebook groups, which are invaluable to travellers! Members will be able to help travellers with recommendations on where to eat, shop and for any vegan meet-ups in the area. These groups can also be very helpful for discovering ‘accidentally vegan’ (or not so accidentally vegan!) local cuisine.
4. Learn The Basics
It is a good idea when travelling to a country where English is not the native language to make an effort to learn the simple phrases, ‘no meat/dairy/egg/fish’ and the word ‘vegan’ if this is a recognised word in the language to communicate your dietary requirements when eating out. There are also many great translation apps, which will help you out if you need to translate on the move!
5. Seek Out Accommodation Equipped with a Kitchen
By booking an Airbnb with a kitchen, you will be able to cook delicious vegan meals for yourself with local produce. Money saved from cooking your own meals can also go towards more delicious vegan food when next eating out, win win!
Happy travelling, vegans!
