Toni Braxton revealed that a plant-based diet helped her manage the symptoms of lupus, an autoimmune disease she's been suffering for many years.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation throughout the body. It occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own healthy tissues and organs such as the blood cells, heart, lungs, kidney, joints, skin and kidneys.

The symptoms include fatigue, fever, hair loss, rash, pulmonary problems, kidney problems, swollen joints, among others.

52-year-old singer was diagnosed in 2008. The doctors told her that she would need a heart transplant and might not be able to sing again.

"I was petrified, depressed, and scared, but I realised I had to change my life. I may have lupus, but I decided I was not going to be a victim. Now, I listen to my body," she said.

The singer told Prevention magazine that a plant-based diet helps her to minimise her symptoms.

"I'm becoming plant-based. I'm in the process," Braxton said. "But I'm going fully plant-based," she added.

She also credits the diet for higher energy levels and good blood work.

"It's making me feel better, so there is some truth to it", she told the magazine.

Twelve years after the diagnosis, Braxton admits she feels better than ever.

"I'm lucky today. I'm in a better state today than I was when I was first diagnosed," she says.

"Of the lupuses, I have the worst — but of the worst, I have the best," Braxton said. "I'm always trying to be positive about it."
