Fashion retail giant PVH Corp.—the owner of Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and other popular brands, has announced it banned leather made of exotic-animal in all the collections.
With this move, PVH joins brands such as Chanel, HUGO BOSS, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood, and others which ditched exotic skins.
The company's decision marks a historical victory for animal advocates. The ban will save thousands of crocodiles, snakes, ostriches, and other animals from being captured and killed for their skin in the fashion industry.
The announcement comes after a decade of pushing from PETA. PETA has exposed the exotic-skins industry several times, showing how brutal the process of production of leather bags and accessories is.
Animals are raised on farms, kept in overcrowded cages, tortured and killed while they are still conscious.
The group wrote on their website: "Alligators' necks are hacked open, and metal rods are shoved into their heads; snakes are pumped full of water to loosen their skin, which is then peeled off, often while they're still conscious; and feathers are yanked out of ostriches while they're still alive."
"Crocodiles are social animals who like to hang out in groups and use a range of bellows, growls, hisses, and roars to communicate with each other. They make great mothers, too, and are known to use tools. When they're not killed for boots, they can live for up to 50 years!"
Calvin Klein was the first major fashion designer to ban fur In 1994 after PETA supporters occupied its office in New York.
In 2013 PVH stopped selling angora items and in 2019 PVH removed mohair products from its stores.
