Food brand Tofurky, which has been producing vegan turkey roast since 1995, saw a huge spike in sales this year. The company reported a 22% spike in holiday orders from retailers ahead of Thanksgiving since 2015.
Tofurky roasts are made from wheat gluten and tofu and filled with wild rice stuffing. It can be sold on its own together with plant-based gravy and dairy-free cheesecake.
Tofurky says the growing demand is coming from all of its retail partners.
Retailers try to satisfy the needs of a growing number of vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian customers who want more plant-based alternatives and better sustainable options. The company says the demand is higher than what it can produce due to limitations by staffing.
Plant-based food products sales increased 90% year over year in March, when the countries went into lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, according to data from the Plant-Based Food Association.
Tofurky reported a 600% year-over-year increase in sales of its vegan ham roasts around Easter, said Jaime Athos, CEO and president of Tofurky.
"That was pretty shocking," he said.
"Once you have control over the food preparation, then you can start indulging in this thing you've heard about, this plant-based trend," he added. Tofurky also sells tempeh, plant-based slices and sausages.
