Tennis superstar Serena Williams launched a new collection that features a vegan line at the New York Fashion Week earlier this month.
S by Serena Spring 2020 collection includes dresses, pantsuits, and jumpsuits made from vegan leather.
Williams says the new collection is a “fashion passport” inspired by her travels to Africa.
“That’s where I got the giraffe print from,” she told Essence - the lifestyle magazine.
“I just feel like giraffe is the new leopard—I mean, at least I’m trying to make it the new leopard!”
Williams said she created the vegan range for the planet.
“I feel like a lot of things are being killed and we’re not saving the earth,” she said.
“We can all just do one small thing and help out so that was also a lot of our inspiration.”
The collection also features items in green colour that is associated with environmentalism.
“One of the hottest colours this year on the runway for spring and summer is green,” Williams said.
Williams and her partner Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian say they eat mainly vegan food now.
Ohanian says he got inspired by the movie “The Game Changers.”
“Around the same time, I tried the Impossible Burger, and I was like, ‘Damn! This is good!’ It wasn’t long after that I invested in it. Now I’m whole-hog, so to speak, on the plant-based revolution,” he said.
