To mark National Pizza Day (9th February), One Planet Pizza is announcing that it has taken its planet-protecting credentials to an exciting new level by introducing Carbon Labels on the  packaging of its plant-based pizzas. It is the first frozen pizza company to measure and state the carbon footprint of their products, andthe company’s core pizza range will carry the labels from March 2022.

The calculations, carried out independently by My Emissions, were based on switching typical meat and dairy based pizza toppings such as cheese, bacon and pepperoni with plant-based alternatives, and used a standard processing value from the My Emissions database for pizzas.

One Planet Pizza’s hugely popular Peppernomi pizza is the hero product, with an impressive 54% lower carbon footprint than a standard meat pepperoni pizza (swapping out for non-vegan ingredients). The average difference of the rest of the core range, which includes Mediterranean Vegetables, Hawaiian and Three Cheeze Margherita, is 47%. Three of the four products measured achieved A ratings - meaning the pizzas sit in the band of manufactured food products with the lowest carbon emissions.

Co-founder of One Planet Pizza, Joe Hill, says: “As a company committed to helping people make climate friendly food choices, this is hugely exciting for us. Adding the carbon labelling is the only way to give consumers the transparency they need to make easy earth loving choices. We are so proud to be the first frozen pizza company to take this step and with three A ratings achieved, we can now identify what we should focus on to achieve our Carbon Neutral goal.”

My Emissions is dedicated to making carbon labelling quick, simple and affordable so that all food companies can start displaying the carbon footprint of their food.  The company’s food carbon footprint database contains values from thousands of published ‘life cycle’ assessments to enable companies to measure and work towards reducing their carbon footprint.  Results are in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Matthew Isaacs, co-founder of My Emissions, adds: “One Planet Pizza isleading the way on climate transparency. It’s been great to see how committed they are to understanding and reducing their impact, and we can’t wait to see what the response will be to the labels in-store."

One Planet Pizza plans to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2023 and the team isalready working with My Emissions to identify the changes needed to make this a reality.

One Planet Pizza is available for delivery from The Vegan Kind.
