In his latest interview, tennis star Novak Djokovic spoke about his vegan diet and why he decided to co-produce the hit documentary Game Changers.

Although he doesn't want to be labelled a vegan, he admits that he has been following a plant-based diet for many years and he credits it for his success in sports.

The Wimbledon Champion likes his meat-free food so much that he even opened a vegan restaurant Eqvita in 2016 in Monte Carlo.

Djokovic revealed that when he was younger his parents ran a pizzeria where he ate regularly and he would even have a slice of pizza with bread.

As he got older, he suffered a dip in form and felt exhausted after the matches and tournaments. He learnt that he had an intolerance of gluten, dairy and refined sugars and that's why he decided to change his diet and go vegan.

Djokovic took a role as executive producer in Netflix documentary Game Changers alongside other sports megastars, including Lewis Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film documents the rise of plant-based nutrition in professional sports and highlights the benefits of meat-free living.

When asked why he decided to take part in creating the movie, Djokovic said: "Well, they reached out to me almost when the movie was done. I wasn’t very vocal about being a plant-based athlete.

"They heard that during Wimbledon last year when someone asked me at the press conference. They wanted me to be a part of it.

"I was definitely very happy to be part of a very impressive group of people, from sport, the movie industry, different fields of life, very successful people who are eating plant-based, being healthy, happy and successful in what they do. That is what it is all about."

Speaking of his diet being key to his success in sports, he said: "Because of my family, I’ve always had a love for food.

"But as an athlete, it became something more—the fuel that determines how I play, how I recover and how alert I am on the court.

"I attribute a great deal of my professional success to my diet."
