Nestle Launches Plant-Based Tuna In Switzerland

Food giant Nestle is launching a new vegan tuna alternative. The product will roll out in Switzerland this month.

The “Garden Gourmet” fish-free tuna is made with pea protein. The tuna can be used in salads, sandwiches and pizzas. It will be available in glass jars in the chilled aisle of supermarkets. 

The product was created within nine months in the corporation’s Swiss research and development centre. 

Nestle has been extensively investing in research and development of new plant-based food products in recent months to appeal to consumers who want to limit the consumption of meat and dairy products. 

The company hopes that consumers are more interested in trying plant-based alternatives during Covid-19 pandemic.

Last month, Nestle said that at-home consumption during the pandemic increased demand for its Garden Gourmet vegan products.

Nestle’s sales of plant-based meat alternatives reached around $200 million in 2019.
