Mulberry Bans Exotic Skins From Its Collections

British luxury brand Mulberry has confirmed it banned exotic skins from all its designs and future collections.

The brand will not use exotic animal leathers such as alligators, crocodiles, ostriches, lizards, or snakes in items from its spring/summer 2020 collection.

Mulberry’s decision comes following years of urging the fashion brand by conservation experts and animal rights organisations such as PETA.

Scientists have been warning that farming and trading wild animals risk outbreaks of animal-to-human diseases and viruses like the latest coronavirus.

It is believed that coronavirus has originated in a Chinese market where wild animals, were kept, killed and sold for human consumption.

“We have spent a lot of time determining and then continually reviewing our sustainability metrics and targets …. At an early stage of this process we decided not to use exotics in our collections and this remains our position,” said Rosie Wollacott, Group Sustainability Manager at Mulberry.

Mulberry joins other luxury brands such as Chanel, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood, and others in making the compassionate decision to ban exotic skins from all its designs.

“Behind every handbag or wallet made with exotic skins is an animal who suffered tremendously,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Mulberry’s decision to ban these cruelly obtained materials is a sign of the times, and PETA calls on other luxury labels to follow its lead.”
