McDonald's is joining a growing list of fast-food chains offering fully vegan meals in the UK.
The fast-food chain is introducing its Veggie Dippers meal - including vegan nuggets served with chips and a soft drink. The offering will launch in the UK on 2 January. The vegan dippers are made of red peppers, rice, tomato pesto, split peas, and they are fried in breadcrumbs.
Is McDonald’s new meal really vegan?
Both the ingredients and cooking method have been certified by The Vegan Society, meaning there is no risk of cross contamination. The company spokesman explained that the product will be fried separately from products containing meat and served with McDonald's UK chips, which are vegan-friendly.
McDonald's is the last main fast food chain after, KFC and Burger King capitalising on increasing demand for vegan food options in the UK. The company admitted that in the last year it had seen an "80% uplift" in customers ordering vegetarian options.
‘Normalising veganism’
Animal welfare non-profit The Humane Society, said McDonald's move would help veganism go mainstream.
"When big global brands like McDonalds start serving up vegan food, it can have a huge meat-reduction impact overall,"- director Claire Bass told the BBC:
Peta director Elisa Allen said: "A vegan meal - one that doesn't require killing - is the very definition of a happy meal.”
McDonald’s is the latest fast food chain to offer vegan products. Companies that launched vegan offerings earlier this year claim vegan products significantly boosted their sales.
