Israeli Food Startup Unveils World's First Cell-Based Ribeye Steak

Israeli food startup Aleph Farms together with its partner Technion of the Israel Institute of Technology, have unveiled the world’s first cultivated slaughter-free ribeye steak.

The prototype was developed using 3D bioprinting technology and the meat grown directly from the cells of cows. The technology is using real cow cells and without any GMOs. 

“The proof-of-concept incorporates real muscle, fat, and vascular-like system similar to a ribeye from a slaughtered cow, in strategy to build a diverse portfolio of cultivated meat cuts of any dimension,” said the Rehovot-based firm in a press release. 

The technology enables the “perfusion of nutrients” across thicker tissue, which gives the meat the shape and structure similar to traditional ribeye steak. The printed steak looks like a real thing before and after cooking.

Cellular agriculture to grow animal meat is much better for the environment than animal farming. It requires a fraction of the resources,  produces less carbon and does not require antibiotics.
