Furniture giant IKEA announced it plans to make half of its restaurant menu meals plant-based by 2025.

The company said that 80 per cent of menu offerings will not contain red meat, and 80 per cent of the packaged food for sale in the bistros will be plant-based.

More than 680 million customers bought food in IKEA stores worldwide in 2019.

This year IKEA launched a vegan version of its signature Swedish meatballs in its restaurants.

Lena Pripp-Kovac, chief sustainability officer at Inter IKEA Group, said in a statement: “Research confirms the importance of making sustainable products affordable and desirable, and IKEA can really make a positive difference here.”

“The more sustainable choice shouldn’t be a luxury for the few. It should be part of people’s everyday life.”

Plant-based menu options have been expanding around the world. Plant-based brands increase the number of products they offer and the number of retailers and restaurants where these products are available.

According to reports, plant-based-meat market will reach $74 billion by 2029, up from $12 billion in 2019.
