With the 3.5 million people in the UK who now identify themselves as being vegan, the abundance of plant-based eateries, incredible meat alternatives and the number of celebrities who have adapted a vegan lifestyle, it is safe to say that the vegan way of life is grabbing more attention than ever - especially from a health perspective.

A recent article in the Telegraph stated that men swapping to a plant-based diet is the new sign that they have hit a ‘mid-life crisis’. Instead of buying a new sports car, hitting the high- street for a style make-over or growing a goatee, 24% of men are now cutting out the animal products in hopes of becoming fitter, healthier and happier.

The question we have at TheVeganKind is, why wait to make the change? According to the Office for National Statistics, the average life span for the UK population is 79.2 years for males and 82.9 years for females. People are certainly living longer thanks to better sanitation and medicine but the quality of life for many is controlled by sickness in the form of heart disease, liver disease, diabetes and cancer.

 If only something as simple as diet could help change that? Well, believe it or not, it can.

Research carried out by the likes of Dr. Michael Greger, Dr T. Colin Campbell, Dr John McDougall & Dr Joel Furhman shows that a plant-based diet can reverse disease and if you start early, it can even prevent those illnesses occurring all together. In the words of Dr.Greger, ‘the foods we chose make a difference’.

Animal products have been linked to a range of diseases (in both men and women) and by reducing these or better yet, cutting them from your diet all together, can have a significant impact on your overall health and quality of life. Vegan staples such as legumes, grains, fruits and vegetables can help fight off cancerous cells, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of obesity and the illnesses that are a associated with it such as diabetes and heart disease.
