Vegan nuggets will be available at Burger King restaurants tomorrow!
Burger King is the first fast food chain to launch plant-based nuggets in the UK!
According to the chain, the new vegan nuggets will taste the same as the meat originals. The meat-free nuggets are made from soy and other plant-based proteins and contain no animal-based ingredients. They have been developed by The Vegetarian Butcher - the plant-based meat specialist company owned by Unilever.
The new product launch follows Burger King releasing a plant-based Rebel Whopper burger two years ago, which happened to be unsuitable for vegans as it was cooked on the same grill as meat and the release of Vegan Royale burger a year ago, which is prepared separately from animal products. This time, the new menu item is totally vegan friendly - the nuggets are certified as 100% vegan by the Vegan Society.
Burger King aims to have 50% of its menu meat-free by 2030 to help achieve a target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 41%.
Commenting on the launch, Burger King UK chief executive Alasdair Murdoch said: “We’re pleased to announce the launch of BKUK’s new vegan nuggets across our menus nationwide – a significant milestone for the company and an important next step in achieving our target of a 50% meat-free menu by 2030."
“Adapting to customer preferences is a key focus at Burger King – we are committed to helping our guests make good decisions about what they eat and drink and providing them with informed choices – whether through clear nutrition and allergen labelling, or by offering vegan and vegetarian options," he added.
“The launch is another positive step in reducing our carbon footprint and driving innovation in our menus in response to growing demand for meatless alternatives and products with no animal protein in the UK.”
