Better Nature, the innovative, UK-based tempeh brand has joined forces with One Planet Pizza, the UK’s first plant-based frozen pizza company to create the world’s first frozen tempeh pizza.

The limited edition pizza, named “Masala Tempehtation”, is topped with Better Nature’s Moreish Masala Better Bites, Masala sauce, green peppers, red onion, coriander, chickpeas and Applewood’s smoky vegan cheese. The name of the pizza was chosen through a competition run on Instagram by both brands with over 150 entries.

Tempeh is an all-natural plant-based protein originating in Indonesia that’s packed with protein, fibre and a range of micronutrients including iron and calcium. It’s typically made by fermenting cooked soybeans together into a dense block that’s easy to cook and great for the gut. However, it can be made out of any legume, nut, grain or seed - Better Nature’s Masala Better Bites are made out of lupin beans, a protein-rich legume found in Germany and Australia.

Elin Roberts, co-founder and Head of Marketing at Better Nature commented: “We’re so excited to be collaborating with One Planet Pizza. Their products really help people re-imagine the food they can enjoy on a vegan diet, making ethical eating more accessible to the masses.

“It wasn’t so long ago that it was a struggle to find vegan pizzas in restaurants - even without the cheese - so to now be able to pick up a frozen one in-store or online to enjoy in the comfort of your own home is very exciting for our industry. Making plant-based alternatives in more accessible formats is key if we’re going to change consumer eating habits for a more sustainable future. To see our tasty tempeh help lead the way in that change is a really inspiring moment for us all at Better Nature.”

Joe Hill, co-founder and Director of One Planet Pizza added: “A collaboration between us and Better Nature was only natural - two purpose-driven plant-based brands coming together to create something unique, doughy and tempeh-ting. When we chose to create a Masala-spiced pizza, we wanted to ensure that the cultural history of the Masala sauce was highlighted. We reached out to Analida from Ethnic Spoon - a passionate advocate and educator of culinary cultural history - who was able to educate us about the fascinating history of the Masala Sauce, which we will be sharing on our social media channels. This limited-edition flavour is the first of its kind and we're looking forward to hearing people’s reviews!”

Better Nature is an innovative tempeh brand founded in 2019 by four foodies - Christopher Kong a biochemist turned entrepreneur, Indonesian-born food scientist Amadeus Driando Ahnan, product developer Fabio Rinaldo and Elin Roberts, a marketing strategist and advocate of plant-based living.

Their mission is to end the suffering caused by the animal protein industry and create a happier, healthier, more sustainable planet for everyone, by creating protein without compromise. Protein that doesn’t compromise on being nutritious, delicious, natural and sustainable.

Better Nature has already won multiple awards including three international food tech competitions, two world-class equity-free incubator and accelerator programmes and has spoken at events alongside some of the most established plant-based leaders. They won Best New High-Protein Food and Beverage Startup at the 11th Protein Summit, the TWB Startup Award and more recently, the Most Innovative Plant- or Cereal-based Food Ingredient at Fi Europe.

Better Nature products are manufactured in Europe and only use Pro-Terra certified soybeans, dedicated to minimising waste, ensuring fair prices and prioritising environmental protection. All products are organic, certified by the Soil Association, and none of their ingredients or products are air freighted.

One Planet Pizza likes to do frozen pizza differently. They create plant-based pizza with a purpose, never using animal ingredients in their creations, and are committed to revolutionising the reputation of plant-based food through their innovative and indulgent recipes. One Planet Pizza has the health of the planet at the centre of all they do, using 100% recyclable and compostable packaging for every pizza - making them a zero-to-landfill product.

One Planet Pizza is heavy on the “cheeze” and toppings, but 20% lighter on the carbon footprint and 50% lighter on the salt and sugar compared to traditional meat and dairy pizzas. In other words, every slice is better for you and for the planet. This is the future of pizza, and it tastes incredible.

One Planet Pizza produces over 500 pizzas per day and have scooped up multiple awards for their pioneering pizzas and ethical approach to business. They are available to buy in over 500 independent shops including TheVeganKind Supermarket.
