Major fashion houses Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen join the companies which recently committed to stop using animal fur.

The brands, both owned by parent company Kering,  announced the news in 2020 Universal Registration report.

The document states: “Most of the Group’s Houses do not use fur. Gucci is part of the Fur Free Retailer program promoted by NGO Fur Free Alliance. It has banned the use of furs across its entire range since its Spring/Summer 2018 collections. Gucci is also committed to no longer using Angora."

Other Kering-owned brands, including Gucci and Bottega Veneta, have already stopped using fur and offer only faux fur for their clients.

According to Vogues Business, sales of animal fur have been falling while demand for vegan fashion items increased by 258 percent in the United States and the United Kingdom alone.

The list of luxury fashion houses which stopped using fur included Versace, Prada, Armani, Michael Kors, and Margiela.

Kering's move comes as an answer for changing consumer tastes and as a way to meet sustainability goals.

The corporation is also one of the early  investors in company working on developing vegan leather from mushrooms which indicates that fashion designers and retailer are starting to reconsider their relationship with traditional leather.
