The wellness industry has taken the world by storm, and it has been selling us the lie that leading a healthy lifestyle must be expensive. In reality, wellness is the act of practising healthy habits and treating your body well.

2020 has been a year of uncertainties and tragedy. We’re currently in a time where it’s more important than ever to pay attention to your mental health and body. Adopting healthy habits can make a whole lot of difference when dealing with challenging scenarios, like spending time away from loved ones, and isolating indoors.

What I’m trying to say is that looking after your wellbeing needn’t be difficult or cost an arm and a leg. You can improve your mindset and body by making the simplest changes in your everyday routine. So make a start by trying out these next few tips!

Processed foods are everywhere you look, and I’m sure that you don’t need me to tell you that they’re not particularly good for our health. They’re packed full of fat, sugar, and sodium, and they’re often high in calories, too.

Many of us could do with eating a bit more real food, as in, food that grows from the earth. After a few months of being vegan, I found that my energy levels had increased just because I was eating more plants. Digesting meat is a tiresome task for your body, but plant foods can be digested a lot easier. Having more energy meant that I had more motivation to do exercise, which, in turn, did wonders for my mental health.

Here are a few plant-based recipe suggestions to spark your inspiration:

Constantly being plugged into our devices stops us from being present in the moment and we can forget to enjoy the little things in life. It’s great that the internet keeps us connected with the world and our loved ones, especially at a time like this, but it’s important to take a break sometimes. Try to get into the habit of going offline every weekend, or every weeknight, whatever works best for you.

Various studies suggest that there’s a link between our gut and brain, which means, an unhealthy gut might be having an impact on your mental health. You can make improvements to your gut health by taking probiotics and eating fermented foods, lowering your intake of sugar, learning to manage your stress levels, and staying hydrated.

The modern world is busy, and we’re all being dragged along with it, meaning that sometimes our wellbeing takes a backseat. Although it might seem impossible to juggle your work life, social life, and wellbeing all at once, I promise you can do it - all whilst adhering to a healthy sleep schedule!

We fall into the bad habit of not getting enough sleep as early as our student years. Whether it’s pulling an all-nighter to finish work, or to complete the latest box set, it’s a habit that we all need to get out of.

Everyone’s familiar with the immediate effects of lack of sleep, such as feeling irritable and not performing your best, but sleep deprivation can cause long-term effects as well. If you have a bad sleeping schedule, you’re at a higher risk of medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes. It can even shorten your lifespan.

Whether it’s pottering around your garden, going for a walk around a local park, or taking a hike, spending time in nature is one of the greatest ways to wind down and stay grounded. It’s been proven that nature can reduce our stress, anxiety, and even help us cope with pain. Whether you’re an outdoorsy person or not, it’s a simple fact that us humans belong amongst nature. So if you can, go and take a walk surrounded by trees or escape to the countryside for the weekend every now and then.
