60,000 Products Have Been Registered With Vegan Trademark

The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark has registered its 60,000th product this week - which means there is a new record number of vegan products in the market.

The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark has registered its 60,000th product this week.

The record was broken when Smurfit Kappa became the first packaging business in the world to register with the certification. Smurfit Kappa’s corrugated products, are both vegan and environmentally friendly. The company is now offering packaging that is free from animal ingredients and animal testing.

The Smurfit Kappa Group plc is Europe's leading corrugated packaging company and one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world. They employ approximately 48,000 members of staff and run over 350 packaging plants and paper mills in 36 countries. Its materials are 100% renewable and produced sustainably.

The company is currently working towards reducing its carbon dioxide emissions and reach at least net-zero emissions by 2050.

Research by The Vegan Society, shows 97% of vegans and vegetarians look for vegan labels on food and drink product. Also, the 2021 survey confirmed that the Vegan Trademark is the most recognised vegan certification scheme.

So far, The Vegan Society has registered 60,000 products since the trademark was created in 1990, with an impressive number of 10,411 products last year alone.

The Vegan Trademark is used for vegan products worldwide, including food, drink, cosmetics, clothing, household items, and many more.

In 2005, Ultra Glow Cosmetics becomes the first makeup brand to be registered with the Vegan Trademark. In 2006 the Vegan Trademark registered its 1000th product. 2021 marked the first global fast-food chain - Burger King registering its menu items.

Ericka Durgahee, Business Development Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society, said:“Announcing our partnership with Smurtfit Kappa couldn’t have come at a better time. Not only are they the first packaging company to register products with us, they are also the 60,000th product to hold the Vegan Trademark. We’ve come along way since we registered our first product in 1990.”

“We’ve been wanting to register vegan packaging for a while now – it just makes sense. It’s extremely important that companies like Smurfit Kappa, that are also consciously working to reduce their environmental impact, lead the way in vegan packaging and help brands offer full consumer confidence. We have no doubts that this partnership will see other Trademark holders make the switch to vegan packaging for their products too.”

Mark Robinson, Senior Business Development Manager at Smurfit Kappa Markham Vale, added: “At Smurfit Kappa, we pride ourselves on providing innovative and sustainable packaging. We are thrilled to be the first packaging company to be recognised as Vegan Society Certified. This accreditation will give reassurances to customers with a preference for vegan products that all components of our finished products are cruelty free and not from animal origin.”

The Vegan Trademark is the oldest and largest vegan verification scheme, managed by a team of vegan experts. It gives brands and consumers confidence in their purchasing decisions.
